Course Details

SPoRTS – Standard Principles of Resuscitation & Trauma in Sport

SPoRTS is a practical, scenario-based immediate care course for anyone involved in supporting participants in a sporting environment.

The 1-Day SPoRTS for All course develops the knowledge, practical skills and decision-making required to assess and manage the injured or unwell player. Training has a strong practical focus, using skills stations, case-based discussion and realistic field-of-play scenarios.

Course Content

The course covers the assessment and management of common and potentially serious sporting injuries and medical emergencies, including:

• Musculoskeletal injuries
• Concussion and head injury
• Spinal assessment and stabilisation
• Immobilisation and player handling
• Safe removal from the field of play
• Wound management and control of bleeding
• Recognition of the deteriorating or seriously unwell player
• Structured assessment and escalation of care
• Teamwork, communication and structured handover

Participants work through realistic field-of-play scenarios, developing a structured approach to immediate care and practising both team-member and team-leader roles.

Basic Life Support

Participants attending the 1-Day SPoRTS course should hold a current, in-date Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate. This allows the programme to concentrate on sports-specific immediate care rather than repeating a full BLS course. Resuscitation may still form part of the practical scenarios, allowing participants to apply their existing BLS skills in realistic sporting situations.

If you do not currently hold an in-date BLS certificate, we run regular BLS courses. Where there is sufficient demand from a SPoRTS group, a dedicated BLS course can also be arranged on the day immediately before the SPoRTS course.

Looking for more advanced training?

Our 2-Day SPoRTS Advanced course provides a more comprehensive programme for healthcare professionals, incorporating resuscitation training and practical resuscitation skills alongside the wider assessment and management of trauma and medical emergencies in sport.
