A practical, scenario-based sports immediate care course for healthcare professionals and others involved in providing pitch-side or field-of-play care. The course focuses on the assessment and management of injured or unwell players, practical skills, clinical decision-making and realistic sports scenarios.
The SPoRTS course is designed for healthcare professionals and others who have responsibility for providing immediate care in the pitch-side or field-of-play environment.
The 1-Day SPoRTS course has a strong practical focus, developing the skills, knowledge and decision-making required to assess and manage the injured or unwell player. Training is delivered through practical skills stations, case-based discussion and realistic sports scenarios.
The course covers the assessment and management of common and potentially serious sporting injuries and medical emergencies, including musculoskeletal injuries, concussion and head injury, spinal assessment and stabilisation, immobilisation, player handling and safe removal from the field of play, wound management and control of bleeding.
Particular emphasis is placed on structured assessment, recognising when a player requires removal from play or escalation of care, effective use of available equipment, teamwork, communication and structured handover to ambulance and emergency services.
Participants work through realistic field-of-play scenarios, allowing them to apply their existing clinical and Basic Life Support skills in the sporting environment and practise both team-member and team-leader roles.
Basic Life Support
Participants attending the 1-Day SPoRTS course should hold a current, in-date Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate. This allows the programme to concentrate on sports-specific immediate care rather than repeating a full BLS course. Resuscitation may still form part of the practical scenarios, enabling participants to apply their existing BLS skills in realistic sporting situations.
If you do not currently hold an in-date BLS certificate, we run BLS courses approximately every two weeks. Where there is sufficient demand from a SPoRTS group, we can also arrange a dedicated BLS course on the day immediately before the SPoRTS course.
For participants looking for a more comprehensive programme, our 2-Day SPoRTS course incorporates resuscitation training and practical resuscitation skills within the programme, alongside the wider assessment and management of trauma and medical emergencies in sport.
